In the southwest Valley, cities are looking ahead to keep development on its upward trend.

The Goodyear City Council just approved an agreement with Salt River Project to bring surface water into the city for the first time.

The city’s water supply comes only from groundwater wells, so officials say this agreement will provide more water from reliable sources.

Goodyear won’t connect to the SRP canals for several years, but once the system is in place, 8 million gallons of water a day will be pumped into the city.

The water that will be pumped is Central Arizona Project water Goodyear is allotted, and will go through a future water treatment plant.

Officials expect development to keep expanding and will use development fees to help fund the $106 million project.
