Public pools open valley wide this weekend with many municipalities offering two week swim classes for children and adults now through August.

A study by the National Institutes of Health found formal swim lessons reduced drowning risks for children ages 1 to 4 by 88 percent.

The Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona website shows drowning is the top cause of injury-related deaths for children in the state, especially kids between 1 to 5 years old.

This year, as of June 1, 11 people have drowned in Arizona - five were toddlers, one was a 6-year-old and five were adults. One toddler died after falling head first into a bucket of water.
