A prominent Latino advocacy group is bringing a conference to Phoenix this summer, and city officials are using it to tout the region’s inclusivity.

The National Council of La Raza, or NCLR, is holding its annual Latino family expo in Phoenix this July.

The organization was founded here, and the mayor joined NCLR leaders to talk about the ways Phoenix has become more diverse.

And, more importantly, as NCLR President Janet Murguia says, how Arizona has moved on from SB 1070, a disputed state law criticized as racial profiling.

“I think there’s an important story to be told that could help the rest of the country and other states to learn about the pitfalls of approving legislation that are unwelcoming and anti-immigrant,” she said.

The convention will run July 8-11.
