Earlier this week, the Mohave County Board of Supervisors sent a letter urging Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to reconsider a uranium mining ban near the Grand Canyon.

The board seized on the change in administration, hoping to call attention to the ongoing tug-of-war over federal land in the west.

The letter asked Zinke to look into the possibility of allowing uranium mining in the Arizona Strip north of the Colorado River.

Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson said the goal is more jobs and economic growth.

“As a county we’ve been fighting this for numerous years and with the change in administration and the new outlook on federal lands, we thought that we would push forward again to see if we could get a better result out of requesting to open up for the mining,” Johnson said.

A second letter was sent in support of Zinke’s move to look at possibly lifting monument designations in the state.
