Nine months after legalizing hemp as a legitimate crop for farmers, the Navajo Nation is seriously considering legalizing medical marijuana on the country’s largest Indian reservation.

Navajo Nation Council Delegate Lee Jack, Sr. is the bill’s sponsor. He claimed there is a humanitarian and economic need for access.

The measure also has support from former Navajo Vice Presidential candidate Dineh Benally, who recently testified the herb could have eased his mother’s final months of pain while she fought pancreatic cancer.

The legislation would legalize marijuana for medical, economic, industrial or scientific purposes.
