When it comes to retiring, Minnesota looks pretty good. According to a Minnesota Public Radio report, Minnesotans are retiring around age 60. That's because many of state’s older adults are more financially secure than those in Arizona.

Many people in Arizona will retire with a 401(k) and Social Security. Some might even have a pension. Minnesota has one of highest pension coverage levels, according to the National Institute on Retirement Security and that’s key. Dana Marie Kennedy is with AARP Arizona.

"Their major employer is Mayo Clinic, the State of Minnesota, and then the United State federal government so those are all well-paying jobs and often have a pension connected to it," said Kennedy, who is AARP Arizona's state director. But she sayy in Arizona, pensions are not the norm.

"One of our top employers is Walmart," she said. "And Walmart often isn’t known to offer a great package to their employees."

The National Institute on Retirement Security found that in Arizona only four in 10 private sector workers participate in a retirement plan at work.
