Waymo, the company behind those driverless cars, is already test driving them on Valley roads.

The idea of sharing the road with a driverless car might fray some nerves, but for at least one segment of the population, this technology could be life-changing.

Eighty percent of people over the age of 65 live in vehicle-dependent suburbs, according to the Foundation for Senior Living (FSL).

And that’s why FSL decided to partner with Waymo and other organizations, including the Foundation for Blind Children, to promote self-driving vehicles.

Tom Egan is with the Foundation for Senior Living. He said for many seniors who drove a car most of their lives, losing their keys can be difficult:

"So having access to a self-driving car can eliminate a lot of those barriers that for seniors can lead to isolation and when we see isolation we start to see declines in other health conditions," Egan said.

The Let’s Start Driving Campaign aims to educate the public about the potential of this technology and for seniors, Egan thinks it’s huge.
