The ACLU of Arizona is calling on Great Hearts Academies charters schools to eliminate grooming policies they believe target children of color.

This comes after a mother pulled her 12-year-old son out of Teleos Preparatory Academy in Phoenix because she was told his braided hair violated school policy.

Alessandra Soler is the executive director of the ACLU of Arizona.

"This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this type of story. We’ve had many moms, particularly black moms, of kids who are enrolled in charter schools who have contacted us with the same complaints,” she said.

Soler says grooming policies meant to address distractions in the classroom are being enforced unfairly against kids of color.

Great Hearts Academies told KJZZ in a written statement that their braided hair policy is in a handbook provided to parents to review and sign before children start school.
