A measure moving through the Arizona Capitol could extend state lawmakers' terms from two years to four.

The idea has bipartisan support and already passed the full House on Monday. It is waiting to be heard at the Senate.

House Democrat Ken Clark is among its supporters, with a suggestion.

"If you're going to go to four-year terms, start them on presidential election years," he said. "That way, more people have a chance to vote or are more likely to vote. And, I think that adds legitimacy to people being at the Capitol for four years."

Voters would make the final decision whether to approve the new terms.

If it passes, both state senators and representatives who start the legislative session in 2021 could serve two consecutive terms at a limit of eight years in a chamber at a time.
