Phase One of the Gilbert Regional park will include pickleball and tennis courts, a playground, splash pad, a restroom and parking.

The town of Gilbert broke ground on a 272-acre regional park Tuesday.

“The size and scope of this is unlike anything you’ll see in the East Valley,” said Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels, of the park planned near Queen Creek and Higley Roads.

The first phase of the project covers 30 acres and includes pickle ball and tennis courts, a splash pad and playground.

The park includes land owned by Gilbert and the Maricopa County Flood Control District.

The price tag for the whole project is estimated to be more than $100 million. The $16.9 million for phase one will come mostly from development fees.

The park is on track to be open to the public by the end of 2019.
