The financially embattled Murphy Elementary School District held a special board meeting last week where they chose a new superintendent and canceled the promised raises of some Murphy employees.

The Arizona State Board of Education voted earlier last week for the state to take over the finances of Murphy School District.

The district’s four schools had been operating at a budget deficit for years, reports showed.

Now, the board has rescinded a 4 percent salary increase for all non-teacher staff it had approved in late May.

The agenda said the raises for next year will not be happening because of budget restraints.

In the same meeting, the board also approved new superintendent Dennis Goodwin, former superintendent of Camp Verde Unified School District.
