Latinos, African-Americans, Asian-Americans and the LGBT community are only represented in zero to 2 percent of known archival collections.

That number comes from the ASU Library, which is trying to bump up that number. Led by ASU archivist Nancy Godoy, they’re hosting free workshops to teach people how to preserve and archive historical materials.

You might think of an archive and picture really old pieces of paper from official government business, but including marginalized communities could really expand what an archive is.

The Show spoke with Libby Coyner, she’s a collections archivist at Elon University and used to work in the Arizona State Archives. 

The next ASU Scanning and Oral History day is on Saturday, where they’ll give out Archive Starter Kits complete with an acid-free box and gloves.
