The Arizona Department of Transportation is in the planning stages of creating a Sonoran Corridor, which would be a direct connection between Interstate 10 and Interstate 19 south of Tucson International Airport.

Tom Herrmann is a spokesperson for ADOT. He said the corridor would alleviate traffic around downtown Tucson, including at the current interchange between I-10 and I-19 and would provide an easier route for those traveling south.

“It’s also an economic boost for the area," Herrmann said, "because once we have that corridor in place, we would expect that there would be companies that would want to locate along that route, companies that would want to take advantage of being close to the airport and along a connecting route between two interstate highways.”

Herrmann said the agency is seeking public input on the project and it’s holding an event Thursday night in Tucson to lay out three proposals.
