A senate committee approved a bill Monday that would bar a registered sex offender working at a hotel or motel from having key access to a guest’s room. This comes after two women claimed the same man raped them when he was an employee at two separate hotels in Mesa.

Brigham Cluff is a lawyer representing the women. He read a letter from one of them about the importance of Senate Bill 1432.

"Coming forward and telling my story publically is very difficult for me," Cluff read from the letter. "I’ve decided to come forward because I want to make a difference. I do not want what happened to me to happen to any more women. There have been too many victims already."

While some hotels do background checks of employees, it’s not mandated by the state. The accused employee was classified as a high-risk sex offender at the time of the alleged rapes in 2011 and 2012.
