Gov. Doug Ducey has signed a bill that would put limits on the state’s Medicaid program if the federal government gives approval.

The bill would require able-bodied AHCCCS recipients to get a job and limit some to a maximum of five years of insurance.

Former Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a similar law last year, but the Republican-controlled Legislature passed it again along party lines and sent it to Ducey. Ducey spokesman Daniel Scarpinato said the law is needed to ensure that AHCCCS protects taxpayers while insuring the needy.

Last year, federal officials said they were unlikely to approve the waiver, but they have not weighed in on this year's proposal.

The bill also imposes copays on unneeded ambulance and emergency room use.
