Disability advocates celebrated when they saw people with disabilities represented among the nearly 400 new emojis Apple released recently.

Among them were people using wheelchairs, a prosthetic leg, a hearing aid and a service dog, but it’s what you won’t find among those symbols that caught the attention of local writer Amy Silverman.

Amy’s daughter Sophie has Down syndrome, which has no clear-cut representation among all of Apple’s colorful offers. 

Amy wrote about her response to the new emojis for The Washington Post’s “On Parenting” blog, and she joined The Show to talk about how this effort to be more inclusive may have fallen short.
