A flour company owned by the Navajo Nation is shutting down for a year — less than a month after a possible salmonella outbreak at its mill. Navajo Pride recalled more than 42,000 of flour in early April.

Now, the flour mill is being closed for renovations. The Farmington Daily Times reports that the closure will affect 26 employees. Some top workers will be sent to college for additional training, while others may lose their jobs.

During the closure, the mill will replace aging equipment, some more than 30 years old. A spokesman for the mill says the closure was prompted by increasing expenses and decreasing sales.

Though the company is owned by the Navajo Nation, it’s independently run by Navajo Agricultural Products Industry.

A Navajo Nation spokesman said the mill’s shut down was news to him.
