The Phoenix Fire Department is facing criticism after a photo emerged on social media showing COVID-19 first responders wearing rain ponchos as protective gear.

Taken in Ahwatukee, the photo shows two firefighters wearing the thin plastic covers with face masks.

While used to protect from water droplets in the weather, the ponchos are fully approved by the CDC to shield from bodily fluids, as well.

Phoenix rescue workers are provided a full range of protective gear including gloves, removable sleeves, surgical masks and eye protection.

The ponchos are a suitable alternative that Captain Frank Keller says have helped fight an equipment shortage as well as keep first responders safe.

“We're always here to respond and we have to stay healthy in order to do that," Keller said. "Utilizing the PPE to the best of our ability, keeping our work areas and our living areas clean and healthy is what we need to do in order to be successful coming to work every day.”

Keller says all Phoenix fire stations remain fully equipped with suitable medical gear and essential supplies.
