ASU To Offer Some In-Person Classes Later This Summer, Most Staying Online
Most of Arizona State University’s summer courses, which begin on Monday, May 18, will be online even though the state is starting to reopen, but the university is looking to offer a few classes that can't be taught online in-person later this summer.
Associate Vice President of Enrollment Services Matt Lopez said ASU is continuing online instruction for the health and safety of students and faculty. It also provides a chance for students who were unable to return to the Phoenix-area after the pandemic hit to continue their education from a distance.
So far, summer enrollment is up around 13% from last year, Lopez said.
“Every day we’re actually are seeing an increase in enrollment in summer courses," he said. "Many of our students, especially since the spring semester just finished, actually wait to the B session, which starts in July.”
A small number of courses in the summer Session B and that do not lend themselves to remote instruction may be offered in-person later this summer with appropriate safety measures and protocols, said Mark Searle, ASU's executive vice president and university provost, in a May 13 statement. ASU is currently working to assess which classes it will be able to offer in person.
Northern Arizona University's summer courses through June 30 will be offered online. The instruction method for summer courses beyond that date are still to be determined.
The University of Arizona has shifted all its summer courses to online instruction.
