The Arizona State Land Department is auctioning the site where 19 firefighters died two years ago in the Yarnell Hill Fire. The State Parks Department is hoping to be the winning bidders, so a planned memorial can be constructed.

Sue Black, the director the Arizona State Parks Department, said she plans for the 320 acres outside the small town of Yarnell to become the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park. But that’s only if the department wins the public auction, which is required because the land is state owned.

The auction will be held in Prescott on Tuesday, the two-year anniversary of the tragedy. The Land Department appraised the area at just over $300,000 and the Legislature has appropriated $500,000 for the purchase.

If the Parks Department does win the auction, several groups can then go to work on final designs and plans for the public to access the site.

A timeline for the memorial to open has not been set.
