The Republican race for sheriff is among contested Maricopa County elections in the Tuesday primary.

The Maricopa County sheriff oversees one of the largest county jail systems in the country. The sheriff is in charge of nearly 3,300 employees and an annual budget of more than $400 million.

Joe Arpaio, ousted from office in 2016 after 24 years, is seeking a seventh term as sheriff, after waging an unsuccessful primary campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2018.

He’s facing former law enforcement officials Mike Crawford and Jerry Sheridan. Lehland Burton is also running on the Republican side as a write-in candidate.

The winner will face incumbent Paul Penzone, who is running uncontested in the Democratic primary.
