A federal judge in California has, at least temporarily, stopped the Trump Administration from ending counting for the U.S. Census earlier than expected.

The Census Bureau had said it would extend counting through the end of October, but then changed its mind and decided to wrap up by the end of this month; the start of the process had been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. 

A full hearing on the issue is expected soon, but until then, the judge ruled the counting should continue.

The Gila River Indian Community and Navajo Nation had both joined this lawsuit, arguing against the earlier deadline. The decision means groups that are trying to get as many people counted as possible have more time to do that.

Montserrat Arredondo, executive director of One Arizona, is one of them. The Show spoke with her about what she makes of the judge’s decision.
