On Monday, CVS pharmacies officially began administering COVID-19 vaccinations to residents of long-term care facilities in Arizona.

CVS is dispensing vaccines to more than 900 care facilities in the state over a 90-day period.

Tobin Zdarko is a regional director for CVS Health. He says the company is vaccinating residents with the Moderna vaccine primarily because it does not require deep freezing like Pfizer’s version.

“I think everybody’s heard about how the ultra-cold requirement for the Pfizer vaccine and how that adds a little bit of a complexity to it. With the Moderna vaccine, it does not have those ultra-cold requirements.”

Zdarko said past immunizations issued by CVS to long-term care facilities helped the company prepare for this effort.
