Mexican export manufacturers are hopeful that an effort to vaccinate their workers will soon spread border-wide.

This week, roughly 10,000 workers from Tijuana maquiladoras will receive coronavirus vaccinations. Their employers will cover the costs of the medicine, which was provided by California, according to a joint release from San Diego County and Mexico’s Foreign Ministry.

Unless something goes wrong with the pilot project, “it will be replicated in the entire border zone” of Mexico, said Gerardo Vazquez, the head of Index Sonora, which represents export factories in the state.

That expansion could come as soon as June, according to Vazquez.

Mexico is only now vaccinating people between the ages of 50 and 59, meaning that many participating maquiladora workers would otherwise likely have to wait much longer for their doses.
