There is a huge gap in the U.S. education system when it comes to who has the opportunity to take a full range of math and science classes. That gap is probably most obvious for Native American students, and it deeply affects who is making strides in STEM education and related careers.

Rene Begay is a geneticist and research assistant at the Centers for American Indian and Alaskan Native Health at the University of Colorado. She recently participated in the Experiment podcast produced by the Atlantic and WNYC, discussing the proprietorship of Native American research DNA.

The Show spoke with Begay to discuss cultivating opportunities for Native American students to pursue education and careers in STEM fields.
