Flagstaff and its surrounding hills make fantastic venues for playing in the snow, particularly over long weekends. But it’s also causing headaches in local neighborhoods.

Over the New Year’s Eve weekend, local sheriff’s deputies responded to more than 80 calls concerning issues that arose over folks playing in the snow. That included towing five cars and handing out nearly 100 traffic tickets for illegal parking.

"We understand that there’s a lot of people that come up to play in the snow and there’s limited areas. But again we just ask that you respect the private property owners in the area," said Gerit Boeck, a spokesman for the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

The department noted that it wasn’t uncommon for deputies to find hundreds of vehicles in some areas.

Complaints came from neighborhoods off Highway 180. Boeck noted state troopers also respond to complaints about people parking off highway shoulders.
