The state House of Representatives Committee on Government and Elections passed a measure that would require state forms to only provide male or female to indicate a person’s sex.

HB 2294 passed along a party0line vote, blocks a document issued by any agency, board commission or department from listing other options.

Reginald Bolding is the minority leader in the House of Representatives.

"By simply mandating that individuals have to check a male or female box, I think it's hypocritical to what we want to do as a state. We want to make sure we're a welcoming place, an open place, and we allow people to be who they are," Bolding said.

While Rep. John Fillmore, who introduced the bill, says it’s more of a preemptive measure, the Arizona Department of Transportation does allow for some to put an “X” instead of male or female where sex is listed.
