For years, the Park Service and other federal agencies have worked with nonprofits that help with fund-raising and conservation.

But the Bureau of Land Management, which oversees more land than any other agency in the U.S., has worked without that kind of support.

In 2017, Congress created a foundation to help support the Bureau of Land Management, but it was not funded until last year.

One of the group's new board members has an Arizona connection.

Secretary of Interior Deb Haaland recently named four board members to lead the Foundation for America’s Public Lands, including ASU faculty member Stacy Leeds.

Five others will be announced later.
