A bill heading to Gov. Doug Ducey’s desk would provide exceptions to requiring anyone driving for a rideshare company from getting their brakes and tires inspected once per year. 

If signed, the measure would instead allow the owner of a car that is younger than 10 years to attest their vehicle meets safety standards. 

Lobbyist for Uber Shaun Rieve says states with the rules had fewer drivers compared to states without them. And accident rates don’t change. 

"According to our own safety data, markets requiring a vehicle inspection, which are about half the markets Uber operates in, had nearly identical incident rates as markets not requiring TNC inspection. And this is because the vast majority of incidents are driver error and not necessarily dealing with the vehicle," Rieve said.

Aaron Flannery, who drives about 50,000 miles a year on average for Uber, told the House that annual safety checks are important given the wear and tear rideshare vehicles go through. He added the company covers the cost of inspections.
