The state Senate unanimously approved a measure in the hopes of reducing the thefts of catalytic converters. 

The proposal would give police more tools to arrest someone other than a scrap metal dealer in possession of a catalytic converter. 

They are devices that reduce tailpipe pollution from cars and trucks. What makes them desirable is they have valuable metals such as platinum in them.

The state has seen an increase in theft rates since 2020. Current law already makes the sale or purchase of the converters a misdemeanor unless the person is engaged in vehicle repair. 

But the new proposal makes it illegal for unqualified people to be in possession of catalytic converters, or offer them up for sale. 

The bill will head back to the House to consider changes before going to the governor’s desk.
