U.S. immigration authorities are planning on issuing photo ID cards to immigrants in deportation proceedings.

Officials say it is part of a bid to cut paper use and help people stay up to date on required meetings and court hearings.

It is not clear how many will be issued because Immigration and Customs Enforcement is still developing the pilot program. The cards will not be an official form of federal identification.

The cards could allow immigrants to be able to access information about their cases online, rather than using paper documents.

There are concerns about how the cards will be used. Some fear they will not be secure and will track immigrants.

The Biden administration is seeking $10 million for the project in the next fiscal year.
