As waves of humanity crest at the Southwest border, federal authorities have let certain migrants live in the U.S. while their court case goes forward.

A new report from Congress’s watchdog outlines spending to bolster nonprofits that Homeland Security relies on to help migrants who get released.

The report by the Government Accountability Office says between October 2018 and late last year, more than $282 million went to nonprofits that gave short-term migrant aid.

The document also notes that there is a new shelter and services program that received $800 million from last year’s appropriations bill.

The report is based partly on interviews with Homeland Security officials in Yuma and Phoenix, where so many migrant families were released in 2018 and 2019 that a nonprofit coalition had to establish a permanent temporary shelter.
