A Tucson man who came to Arizona decades ago under a refugee program has been identified as a prison guard who committed atrocities during the Bosnian War.

A federal jury this month convicted him of immigration fraud.

Fifty-year-old Sinisa Djurdjic came to the U.S. in 2000.

Nine years later, Homeland Security launched an investigation after receiving a roster of officers suspected of various atrocities during the brutal 1990s war, which was notorious for ethnic cleansing and mass rape.

The department found Djurdjic had lied on immigration papers, and denied serving in military and police units.

During the trial, five former Bosnian POWs testified that they suffered or witnessed abuses by Djurdjic while he served as a prison guard.

A sentencing hearing will be held in August.
