An online program within the ASU College of Health Solutions received a $3 million grant to train people to become community health workers. Funding comes from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration.

The money provides stipends for those participating in the program’s curriculum, according to the program’s project director, Mindy McEntee.

“There’s a lot of different areas for medical need and really, what we’re trying to do is to capitalize on what a lot of the research has shown is that you don’t need necessarily somebody who has an advanced medical degree to make a huge difference in the community at the local level," she said.

Participants who finish the course of study will later have the opportunity to receive certification from the Arizona Department of Health Services when they complete their on-the-job-training with a community partner.
