A little over $1.5 million in National Endowment for the Arts' "Grants for Arts Projects" were recently awarded for artistic ventures in Arizona, and the deadline for the next submission period is rapidly approaching.

Matching grants are disseminated across a wide range of disciplines like dance, literature, opera and visual arts, for instance.

Some may be awarded to government entities such as the Arizona Commission on the Arts, which helps fulfill the NEA’s approved strategic plan across the state.

Other grants may be awarded to umbrella agencies, like the Phoenix Film Foundation which promotes the development, exhibition and education of independent film.

Artists working on solo projects are also encouraged to apply.

The deadline to do so is July 6, 2023, and prospective grantees must register with the System for Award Management.

In the past five years in Arizona, the NEA distributed over $13.4 million either directly or through state and regional partners.

According to a release from the agency, other types of NEA grants include:

  • "Our Town" creative placemaking matching grants program which require a partnership between a nonprofit organization and a local government entity, with one of the partners being a cultural organization. Range: $25,000 to $150,000. Deadline: Aug. 3, 2023.
  • "State and Regional Partnerships" which extend the NEA’s reach.
