The two largest utility companies in the Valley broke records for the most amount of energy customers used at once two different times this weekend.

Those records were first broken on Friday at both APS and SRP, only to be broken again by the end of Saturday.

APS almost reached 8,200 megawatts, and SRP peaked at about 7,800 megawatts.

APS Vice President of Resource Management Justin Joiner says one megawatt is enough to power 160 homes.

“It no doubt challenges both the human side and the investment in the infrastructure side, but we have multiple redundancies and processes in place so that we make sure that our employees are staying safe," he said.

Joiner added records will likely be broken in the coming years due to high temperatures and Phoenix's continued growth. Those records could even be broken this year.

"Even if the temps don't hit 118 again if we have humidity coupled with just continued intense energy usage, we could once again set an all-time peak this year," Joiner said.

The last record for APS was set in July 2020 and SRP’s was set in 2022.
