A California man was found dead on a trail in Tucson this week. Forty-six-year-old Kyle Chance was found on a desert trail in the Tucson Mountains. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department says there was no sign of foul play and that his death was likely due to heat exposure.

Like other parts of the state, southern Arizona has seen weeks of intense heat waves, making the border more deadly for migrants and asylum seekers trekking through the desert.

Last month, Border Patrol agents responded to a 911 call about a Colombian woman who was experiencing heat stroke along a remote stretch of desert near the border. She later died at a Tucson hospital. It was at least the second heat-related death along the border in July.

A count from the advocacy group Humane Borders shows at least 66 sets of human remains have been found along the Arizona borderland between January and the end of June.
