It’s rained enough in northern Arizona that officials have lifted all fire restrictions in the Coconino and Kaibab national forests. And federal officials are easing some fire preparedness levels across the entire U.S. Southwest.

Fire danger is now moderate on the Coconino National Forest, and officials said Tuesday morning that the forecast continues to call for increased moisture and cooling temperatures.

At the same time, the U.S. Forest Service has eased its threat scales. The agency has moved the Southwest to Level 2 from Level 3 on the National Wildland Fire Preparedness Level. That means there are still high dangers but they are being locally managed. Punky Moore is a spokeswoman for the Forest Service.

"That’s the same reason. The conditions in the Southwest indicate there’s a low risk for large fire growth," she said.

Of course, that can change in a moment. And since most fires in the Southwest are caused by humans, she stressed the need to stay vigilant.
