The Sedona City Council is putting aside the idea of banning off-highway vehicles (OHVs) within the city and instead working to reach agreements with rental companies to self-regulate their customers.

The proposed ordinance would have banned OHVs within city limits, citing safety concerns. But at its Tuesday night meeting, the City Council turned the discussion to a voluntary agreement with rental companies instead.

Rental companies operating in Sedona told the City Council they’ll commit to installing turn signals, limiting speeds to 35 miles an hour and installing quieter mufflers. But the agreements would only apply to those companies.

"Them coming forward is a big step for them. Is it perfect, no it’s certainly not perfect," said Sedona Mayor Scott Jablow who said he initially supported.

The council will review the voluntary agreement again in September.
