These Buckeye schools want students to become 'proactive' leaders through program
Download mp3 (964.45 KB)The Buckeye Elementary School District is implementing a new program at two of its campuses this year. It's intended to help students develop leadership skills.
Kindergarten through 8th grade students at WestPark and Inca elementary schools will be participating in a program called Leader In Me.
Anna Carino is principal at WestPark. She said the program requires students to take on new responsibilities in their classrooms.
“So for our younger kiddos that could look as simple as classroom jobs, like who takes the attendance up to the front office or who helps a student when they need to go to the nurse," she said. "For our older grades, it's really about capitalizing on those leadership opportunities across campus, so kind of building in some opportunities for our older kids to buddy up and provide some mentorship for our younger students."
Students will also learn about the "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by author Stephen Covey.
“So for example, habit number one is being proactive," Carino said. "So through those lessons, we’re teaching students ways that they can be proactive to help really set themselves up for success.”
Each class will also develop a mission statement to set goals for what they want to achieve throughout the school year.
