Phoenix will add pedestrian paths, crosswalks along canal in Maryvale

A ceremonial groundbreaking was recently held to kick off the latest phase to transform water delivery passageways into recreation trails in Phoenix.

The first two phases focused on the Grand Canal between Interstate 17 and Phoenix's border with Tempe. Now, it’s Maryvale’s turn.

Dirt paths from 47th Avenue, north of Osborn Road to 75th Avenue and Camelback Road, will get concrete pathways, signalized crosswalks at intersections, better lighting and landscaping, and possible seating areas and fitness stations.

Improvements will be made along the north bank of the canal. SRP uses the south bank for operations and maintenance. Work should be done sometime next year.

Phoenix says it has 180 miles of canal, more than Venice and Amsterdam combined.
