Arizona is home to roughly 500,000 veterans. Many rely on caregivers. But caregiving can take a physical and emotional toll. Now, two local organizations are offering respite dollars. 

Justin McBride is with Duet Partners in Health and Aging. He says his organization, along with the Arizona Caregiver Coalition, are offering up to $1,200 in support per year for veteran family caregivers.

"So this program supports either people who are caring for a veteran, or a Veteran who is a caregiver themselves, because we know that the well being and the mental health of the caregiver is impacted," he said.

Veteran family caregivers tend to be younger than the typical family caregiver and they may face different challenges. 

"They can use this to bring in a professional caregiver. They can bring in a family or friend who doesn't live in the home. They can use it for education and training related to being a caregiver," said McBride.

McBride says veterans are at higher risk of developing dementia or other cognitive impairments.
