The Scottsdale City Council accepted a nearly $1 million grant this summer to pay for homeless people and asylum seekers to stay at a hotel near Pima and Indian Bend roads.

It so concerned a state GOP lawmaker that he has called a public field hearing Wednesday.

The state representative is Republican Matt Gress.

He’s asked if constituents in wealthy McCormick Ranch were told that Scottsdale would take grant money to pay for a handful of nearby hotel rooms for migrants and homeless people.

Among the witnesses Gress has scheduled to speak are a personal finance expert and supporters of the so-called treatment-first approach to confronting homelessness, which differs from initially focusing on finding housing to get people off the street.

Gress says Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega will testify at the hearing to be held at the Civic Center Library.
