As temperatures cool, public lands agencies have begun to carry out prescribed burns to thin fuels and reduce the risk of wildfire, and one of those fires will take place northwest of Phoenix.

The Bureau of Land Management plans to burn cut and piled brush on public lands west of Lake Pleasant, about three miles north of State Route 74.

The agency says it does not plan to close any roads during the burns, but says that local residents may see resulting smoke.

It plans to keep crews on site to monitor the operations, which will take place in September when weather conditions allow.

"There’s a possibility that visitors to the area may see some light smoke on the days when the Phoenix district does the prescribed burns," said Chris Wonderly, a spokesman for the BLM.

The brush piles were created during a project to reduce fuel loads near a target shooting area.
