Chandler has increased the incentives for homeowners to get rid of their grass lawn.

The move is one of several rebates the city is using to encourage  people to conserve water.

Chandler City Council members voted unanimously this week to pay $2 per square foot of residential grass removed.

Shrinking a 1,000-square-foot lawn by half is the minimum to qualify.

Homeowner associations and commercial buildings with bigger lawns can also get money back for taking out grass.

In addition, the council approved new water conservation rebates that are scheduled to take effect on Oct. 1.

Officials say they’re designed to reimburse roughly 25% to 35% of total costs.
