National Weather Service issues wind advisory for Arizona

A red-flag warning has been issued for much of Arizona. The National Weather Service in Phoenix says peak wind gusts will reach 30 to 40 miles per hour in the lower deserts. Higher terrain will see even stronger winds.

Austin Jameson is a meteorologist with the agency.

“It has been unusual for this time of year to have what we refer to as red-flag conditions. It’s more common in the springtime, especially say April where we have dry weather systems come through more frequently," he said.

Jameson says a combination of strong winds and dry air increases the risk of wildfires. The advisory is in effect in the Valley until 7 p.m. Saturday.
