Arizona’s Kris Mayes and 22 other attorneys general filed a letter last week in support of a proposed Federal Trade Commission rule to combat deceptive customer reviews.

The FTC proposed a rule in June to stop marketers from using practices like fake reviews, suppressing honest negative reviews and paying for positive ones.

In a statement Tuesday, Mayes said the proposed rule will “hold bad actors accountable” and “help re-establish trust between customers and businesses.”

The FTC said that it has “taken strong enforcement action in this area” but “case-by-case enforcement” without the authority to enforce any penalties “might not be enough.”

In last week’s letter, the attorneys general also included suggestions to strengthen some of the rule’s provisions.
