Safford, La Paz County get $4.3 million to update water distribution system

Federal money is coming to the rural county of La Paz and the city of Safford for updated water infrastructure.

The rural county and city will collectively get more than $4.3 million in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly say the money will be used to upgrade the drinking water distribution system for Safford’s roughly 10,000 residents. The rest of the funding is going toward bringing the La Paz County water distribution facility up to state water quality standards, with improvements to water tanks and wells there.

The project is one of several funded by some $300 million dollars the infrastructure law is directing toward water reclamation efforts as part of the Colorado River Drought Contingency Plan.
