The Cartwright School District switched to a four-day week this year and is now seeing more job applications from teachers.

The west Phoenix district put students on a four-day week after the pandemic, but this year, it gave staff members Fridays off, as well.

Victor Hugo Rodriguez is a spokesperson for the district. He said the three-day weekend is attracting more teachers to apply for jobs.

“We recently hired five teachers from out of state," he said. "They were interested in the four-day work week and they have friends who are teachers in other states and they’re also inquiring. So we’re hoping that within time, we’re gonna be able to bring more certified teachers.”

He said students also come back more energized and ready to learn on Monday. The school day was extended to give students the same number of learning hours during the week.

“We also have walk-ins, people coming from ASU, coming from different places, trying to inquire about the four-day work week," Rodriguez said.

The district has partnered with after school organizations for those who still need a place to go on Fridays.
