The number of people detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reached its highest since 2020 this month. That’s according to a new report from the data analysis group TRAC.

TRAC’s report shows there are nearly 40,000 ICE detainees nationwide, according to data released by ICE earlier this month. More than 70% of them have no criminal record.

Arizona has the fourth highest population, after Texas, Louisiana and California.

The last time the number of detainees was this high was in early 2020 — before the Trump administration enacted pandemic-era border restrictions that blocked the ability to ask for asylum, and also cut down on the number of arrests for crossing the border.

ICE data gathered by TRAC shows the highest population was in August 2019, with more than 55,000 detainees.
